It’s a very generic and cliche backstory until I flesh it out more and possibly get the assistance of a writer. This is just the general direction I’m going to take it.
Back in the 1960’s the discovery of space opened up a whole new world of possibilities. With time great efforts were made to leave the Earth’s atmosphere and explore the possibilities of the great beyond. Slowly but surely humanity forged along and humbly starting from unmanned space satellites eventually evolved into taking great colony ships into the stars to start new worlds and bring back new riches to the homeworld.
As the centuries passed technology had developed to a point in which Earth became a veritable paradise and humanity had started to settle all over the galactic core of the Milky Way with an enviable standard of living compared to most of history. The discovery of various space anomalys and extraterrestrial intelligence of all kinds exponentiated the power of humanity to unimaginable levels as they expanded at breakneck speed throughout the stars.
Unfortunately despite all of the advancements made fundamentally the core of humanity remained dedicated to maintaining the hierarchies of ego and power and in spite of the availability of endless resources /possibilities certain factions wanted more. For them it wasn’t the wealth of the universe that mattered but the sole aspect of having power over another no matter the cost. Lines were drawn and treaties were made and broken as a multitude of nameless human factions started dividing up the universe amongst themselves and placing entrapments and barriers to limit the power of others while hoarding it all for themselves. This resulted in many endless wars among the stars and increasingly disturbing escalations of destruction caused by ever evolving weaponry.
As a whole the universe and it’s many lifeforms were able to isolate this sickness to certain sectors of space but other than that they played to a policy of quarantine and non-interference in fear of being sucked into the brewing conflict. Given how great life was outside these quarantined sectors few wanted to give a care to giving up their lifestyles to focus on the darkness and depression in these worlds. Thus certain hotspots of space folded in upon themselves and grew to become living dystopia’s built on the soil of abundance. The same endless abundance that brought many worlds to paradise was now being used to send many galaxies into darkness. It is here where our story takes place – in a universe where all hope of advancement is gone and the few rule over the many. In these sectors no race or faction trusts each other and all of them selfishly vie only for their own survival. Alliances are made only out of necessity and once that necessity is accomplished usually quickly break apart into quarreling tribes only to start the cycle again.
